The Bori Safari Lodge is an 12-room boutique resort situated in the rural heart of Kipling country, on the outskirts of a Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, India.  It was conceptualised around the desire to create a harmonious juxtaposition of modern and vernacular  architecture, building technologies and textural treatments. A gentle intervention into the site’s low lying terrain, the design translates the indigenous forms found in tribal Gond architecture into sophisticated lodgings with contemporary interiors. Built on 7.5 acres of farmland, the lodge features a reception courtyard, communal library, outdoor spa, infinity pool, and indoor/outdoor dining facilities.

We wanted the guests at the lodge to have a holistic and immersive experience that is at once both shared and private. In order to do this, we created a distinction between the communal functions of the resort (reception, dining, library, den, pool) and the private (guest rooms). The shared spaces were grounded and traditional structures oriented around a man-made water body. The accommodation units were designed as lightweight modern structures on stilts and scattered throughout the landscape. They face away from the public areas, touch the ground gently and provide a most private experience, nestled into an overgrown, almost wild, green field.

The Bori Safari Lodge thus becomes a rustic yet experientially luxurious abode, infused with both the textural traditions of the past, and modern sustainable amenities of today.
